How to keep those Skin New Year Resolutions

New-Year-ResolutionsThe 1st of January rolls around each year with similar thoughts and motivations for possible achievements for the coming year. We call them New Years resolutions, and for many they include things like, less alcohol, fewer calories, minimizing TV time and getting fit. There are those that also include skin resolutions like moisturize every day, treat those troublesome winkles and maintain a healthy sunblock regime. But did you know there is a difference between the traditional New Year’s resolution and the skin resolution? There is, and it all boils down to psychology, but we at SAI will give you the best advice to overcome.

Will Power Resolutions

Of the 52% of individuals who believe they will keep their resolutions, only 12% succeeded! This is the result of a study conducted by author and psychologist Richard Wiseman. Why is the fallout so high?

The reason is simple; self-restraint is a rational desire and therefore lives in the front of your brain. This area, however, is easily overrun by survival instincts, pleasure being one of them. When we give in to a guilty pleasure we activate a deep desire within the instinct part of the brain and dopamine is released to highlight the fact. That is why we love chocolate, shopping or good wine. We know we will regret it, but we choose the familiar habit.

There are ways to overcome

Self-control can be learnt. As an example, a study revealed that smokers trying to quit the habit were more likely to stop if they exerted self-control of not eating sweets for two weeks prior to attempting to stop. By practicing self-control they took more control of the instinct part of the brain and voilà! In this way it pays to think of self-control as a muscle that needs to be exercised.

It makes sense then to only make one change at a time. By using a self-control technique you will celebrate the small victories without flooding the bodies natural desire mechanism and you will be more likely to succeed. So don’t go try quit smoking, watching TV and chocolate all at the same time… take them step by step.

Our last piece of advice on keeping willpower resolutions is to write your resolutions down and put them on the fridge but do so in a different format. By this we mean, don’t challenge yourself to lose 15kg, as this is a big hurdle, but rather commit to hitting the gym twice per week and exchange your burger meal for a salad without the dressing. This makes these goals far easier to achieve, and if stacked in sequence to your taking control of your instinct then you are far more likely to achieve success. We believe you can do it!

Different to Skin Resolutions

The joy of making skin resolutions is that they play directly into the instinct and survival part of the brain. You will never be challenging evolution when signing up for an aesthetic medicine treatment. You are in effect, evolutionary speaking, making yourself a far more attractive partner and each time your visit SAI you will be activating your survival instincts.

That said, life is busy and things come up, so here are out tips to keeping your skin care resolutions for 2016:

  1. Let the Doctors at SAI help you with your skin resolutions – they know your skin and your desired results but they also understand facial anatomy and skin anatomy that will allow them to reverse the visible signs of ageing in a safe & effective manner. This approach will help you achieve results you never believed possible.
  2. Plan for the year – consult early with your Doctor at SAI and let them create a monthly schedule of treatments with specific goals in mind.
By working in this fashion you will seldom require more than an afternoon of social downtime and always look your best. Nothing makes it more challenging to visit your aesthetic doctor than knowing you are on a tight result schedule combined with major treatments.
  3. Think Preventative – allow Dr Clark & Dr Marks at SAI to prepare your skin for future preventative ageing. This takes the form of skin rejuvenation, homecare and possibly holistic nutritional regimes. By creating a platform of healthy skin the team at SAI will be far more effective at treating those troublesome areas you are most concerned about.
  4. Continue at home – let the team at SAI guide you as to the best homecare regime for your skin. You need to moisturise daily and similarly apply sunblock but there are additions to your homecare regime that will further improve results and maintain treatments for longer. It is often this advice that gets overlooked and the skin resolutions fall behind.
